Assessment Update – Term 1, 2025
At Ararira Springs Primary, we use assessment to support learning and help each child grow. Our main focus is on formative assessment, which means we check in on students’ progress regularly through class discussions, observations, and their work. This helps teachers understand what students already know and what they need to learn next. By using this approach, we can adjust lessons to better support each child and ensure they are making steady progress.
We also use summative assessment, such as the e-asTTle Reading, Writing and Maths tests which children in Years 4-8 sit (from Year 3 in 2026), to see how well students have understood key concepts over time. We bring together all this information to make an Overall Teacher Judgement (OTJ) about a student’s progress twice a year (Term 2 and Term 4). This means we don’t rely on just one test or piece of work but consider a range of evidence. Our goal is to get a clear picture of each child’s learning journey and to communicate their progress and next steps in a way that is meaningful for both students and parents.
The purpose of the assessment and interpreting the results is best discussed in person. If you would like to discuss any of your child’s assessments, please contact the class teacher directly.
