2025 Reporting Update – What it means for your child

As 2025 marks the transition to the refreshed English and Maths curricula, both Ararira Springs and the Ministry of Education (MOE) are closely monitoring student progress to ensure a smooth and effective change. Thanks to our ongoing professional development and early use of structured literacy and maths practices, we are well-prepared for this shift.

We are building a new picture of your child’s achievement based on the updated expectations. At this stage, there are no fully aligned standardised assessment tools for the new curriculum. The MOE is currently working to develop and release these later in the year. This means 2025 is a “bridging year” between the old and new approaches.

Our teachers have been working hard to understand the new expectations. Through classroom observations, students’ work, and formal assessments, they are forming a clearer view of each child’s achievement in Reading, Writing, and Maths.

The Overall Teacher Judgements (OTJs) your child will receive in Terms 2 and 4 are best-fit judgements based on what has been taught so far and how your child is achieving against the new learning goals. These new goals are more ambitious than before, so your child’s OTJ may not always match their current year level, particularly in the early stages of this new change. As the Minister of Education explains, “The refreshed curriculum is internationally benchmarked and more demanding — particularly in lower primary maths.”

Please remember that these first OTJs are benchmarks and may change as teachers deepen their understanding of the new curriculum. OTJs are not an exact science but offer a broad view of your child’s learning. Our teachers are also working to ‘back-fill’ any knowledge gaps to support a smooth transition and ensure strong foundations for future learning.

Please keep an eye on our Week 6 & 8 newsletters for some FAQs and helpful videos to show the new graphing system. OTJs for Reading, Writing and Maths will be released in Week 9 of this term. Drop-in sessions will be advertised so you can chat to Blair or me about how to understand the new expectations, graphs and to navigate the differences in your HERO app.
