It's been an exciting few weeks here at school. Children have been able to go 'no-ice' skating, take part in fire and flow workshops and today, listen to the Monster Music team at a lunchtime concert. What lucky kids!
|
|
|
|
With a growing school, we have more children on the roads and footpaths. If your child is in Year 6 and above it might be time to talk to them about riding their bike on the road rather than the footpath. Let's save the footpath for our pedestrians and children just learning to ride their bikes. If you are riding your bike on the road is VERY important your wear both your helmet (the law) and your vest.

I recently attended a session with my professional coach. Like most sessions, we started with what is on top for me. She shared that in her experience, the feeling of post-covid fatigue is real. In schools, we are sandwiched between fatigue and apprehension about the future.
|
Education is at the crest of massive change. The change has been touted as a 'refresh' however, the reality is that it is about to have an overhaul. We have two teacher-only days to help learn about the changes. The first of these is scheduled for April 24th. Our plan is to share information about the change in future newsletters.
|

When feeling overwhelmed a useful strategy I adopt is a combination of using Te Whare Tapa Wha and Steven Covey's Habits. Covey states that humans are made up of four dimensions. Each aspect requires continuous renewal to remain in balance. If one is neglected it will continually impact the other three. These are closely connected to Te Whare Tapa Wha. Here the premise is, if one wall of the whare (house) is not propped then the house (your wellbeing) will collapse.

Combining this knowledge with gratitude, I record in a journal what I am grateful for or have done to satisfy each area of my well-being. It is an exercise that doesn't take long but has a huge impact on my well-being.

Student Absence Notifications/Late Arrivals - When late for school, please come and sign your child in at the office before heading to class. This is a safety check for both parents and the school as to a child's whereabouts. If you do not make contact you will receive a text and/or call from school enquiring about your child.

Headlice - We have been notified of several cases of headlice in Kaunuku and Hikuwai so please be extra vigilant in checking your children for any signs. More information on what to look for and treatment options can be found here.

Huarapa would also like to extend a very warm welcome to Enzo and Charlotte.

We hope you have all settled in, have made some new friends and that you will soon love Ararira as much as we do!

If you know of families moving into the area or with preschoolers, please encourage them to fill out our online enrolment form soon as possible. This allows us to plan ahead and recruit the teachers we might need!
|
|
|
Think before you park! - With our school numbers growing and more parents coming to pick up children before and after school please think before you park to make sure driveways of our neighbours are clear and you are not parking on yellow lines, especially around the crossing to keep our tamariki safe.
|
|

Second-Hand Uniforms - The THT has a small selection of second-hand uniform items available for purchase. We are also looking to increase our selection and would welcome donations of good-quality uniform items. All profits are used by THT to improve our school and provide resources for our tamariki. A huge congratulations to Henry EP, Zoe W, and Amelia M who placed in the top three in their races. Henry and Amelia both placed in the top two positions in their races and will be taking part in the Canterbury Swimming Competition.

Cyclone Gabrielle - Our Selwyn mayor, Sam Broughton, has matched local schools with schools in the North Island who were affected by the cyclone. We have been matched with Kaiti School in Gisborne. Our fundraising of $1200 will go directly to the school and they have asked their student leaders to identify what to spend it on. Thanks so much for your generosity, we will let you know how they use the money. So nice to know exactly where your money goes!
