Kia ora e te whānau,

It was an absolute privilege to spend a few days at Hanmer this week with the Year 5 and 6 team. The camp went off without a hitch thanks to the superb organisation of Blair and Meeghan. These teachers were incredibly well supported by Sam and Louise. Thanks for the hard work in making the camp a success.
Working alongside the team was a wonderful support crew of parents. Thank you for giving up your time to support the camp, we know it is a big ask and couldn't do it without you. The children went to the pools and took part in a range of activities that included tree climbing, mountain biking, orienteering, bush skills, low ropes, swimming and team building. By being so open to helping and supporting the camps our team is demonstrating our values of caring, curious and capable.

This week Micahel has been supporting learners with the school-based ePro8 challenge. Successful teams will then compete at a local level. Thanks, Michael for this.

In the past, we have offered coaching to our senior students. This was halted due to COVID but we would like to start this again. After a little training, the time commitment is 20 - 30 mins per student every three weeks. If you coached three students you would be giving back 30 mins a week. This could coincide with drop off our pick up to maximise your time. If you are interested in being a coach for Year 8 students, please email to let me know.

I had a wonderful time with family celebrating my Dad's 90th birthday recently and this weekend my daughter is off to her Year 13 formal. Hold them close and enjoy the moments, time goes fast.

Kia pai te wiki,
Claire and the team

We hope you have all settled in, have made some new friends and that you will soon love Ararira as much as we do!
If you know of families moving into the area or with preschoolers, please encourage them to fill out our online enrolment form soon as possible. This allows us to plan ahead and recruit the teachers we might need!

Student Absence Notifications and Late Arrivals

When late for school, please come and sign your child in at the office before heading to class. This is a safety check for both parents and the school as to a child's whereabouts. If you do not make contact you will receive a text and/or call from school enquiring about your child.

We also have a limited supply of brand new school uniform jackets for sale at the discounted price of $80 each. These jackets were incorrectly cut and are not the same sizing as those currently for sale on the Argyle website, so if you are interested in purchasing one of these jackets, please pop into the office with your child so you can try on before purchasing.

Wheelchair

We are looking to get a wheelchair for school, and wonder if anyone out there might have one (preferably adult sized) in full working order that they would like to donate. If so, please get in touch with Justine or Trine in the office.

Tummy Bugs and COVID-19

We have had a spike in tummy bugs, so just a reminder as per the MoH guidelines to please keep your child home for a minimum of 48 hours after the most recent episode of vomiting or diarrhoea so as to limit the spread of the virus.

Also, a reminder the MoH advice is that you must self-isolate for 7 days while you recover from COVID-19. This includes if you have had COVID-19 before. Day 0 is the day your symptoms started or when you tested positive, whichever came first. You cannot end your self-isolation early, even if you later test negative during the 7 days. Your child may come back to school on Day 8 providing they are symptom-free.

Mobile Phones

We have recently received reports of parents and caregivers using their mobile phones while driving in and around the school carpark. Please don't use your mobile phone while driving.

It is illegal to send and receive text messages, emails, or take calls on hand-held mobile devices while driving in New Zealand, and is a danger to our precious tamariki and families.

Selwyn District Council School Travel Plan Survey

To get a better understanding of how our school families are travelling to and from school, the Selwyn District Council are running a Schools Travel Plans Survey which shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to complete.

The purpose of a school travel plan is to:
  • Improve the safety of your children’s travel to and from school
  • encourage and support school families to reduce the use of cars
  • reduce congestion at the school gate
  • reduce energy use and pollution of our environment.
Responses will be kept confidential between you and the Road Safety Team at Selwyn District Council, and participants will go in the draw to win swim vouchers for the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. The survey will be open until 11.59pm, Monday 5 June 2023.
