It is very hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the year. Winter has arrived in the last two weeks and it is time to pile on the winter clothes. I am back this evening from two days at a wonderful CPPA conference that I helped organise.
|
|
|
|
I opened the newsletter to view the content and realised that all I had written on Monday had disappeared. Never mind, I will not try and dredge through my memory to see what my Monday thoughts were. Instead, I will vow to keep a copy of future ramblings in a backup location and share a few pearls of wisdom from Dr Natalie Flynn and Nigel Latta.

Natalie talked about leading, teaching and parenting in a BANI world. BANI is an acronym for brittle, anxiety-producing, non-linear and incomprehensible. Our role is to care for, notice and provide a safe place for our students. Natalie reminded us of the positive psychology of Martin Seligman and the need to apply a TLC approach to stressful events. Consistent application of this approach trains our brains to become resilient. We need to remember that these things are;

Temporary - we can bounce back and this will pass, "nothing lasts forever".
|
|
Limited - limit our worries and don't let it pervade our lives, "look for moments of safety"
|
|
Considered - not about us, there are other circumstances at play.
|
|
|
|
|
In the afternoon Natalie spoke about burnout and the positive habits we need to form to look after ourselves. I will share more from Nigel Latta next time.

We kicked of science week with a Nano Girl hui this week. This was a wonderful chance for children to see science being promoted and women working in the science field. Curiosity is one of our values and is closely linked to science.
|
|
|
|
A final plug, as you know we operate a coaching model at Ararira. This is with staff and we try to also coach our senior students. Our Year 7s will take part in group coaching but we would like to offer our Year 8 students 1:1 coaching. Here is a link to a short article explaining the process and commitment. Current COVID-19 Isolation Requirements
A reminder the MoH advice is that you must self-isolate for 7 FULL days while you recover from COVID-19. This includes if you have had COVID-19 before. Day 0 is the day your symptoms started or when you tested positive, whichever came first. You cannot end your self-isolation early, even if you later test negative during the 7 days. Your child may come back to school on Day 8 providing they are symptom-free.

Household Contacts do not need to isolate, but should test daily for 5 days with a rapid antigen test (RAT) from the day the person with COVID-19 tested positive, wear a face mask if you leave your home during your 5 days of testing, and if you test positive for COVID-19, you must self-isolate for 7 days.
|

Argyle Uniform Price Increase
|
Due to inflationary pressures, Argyle are regrettably having to increase their prices. The price increases will take effect on 01 July 2023.

Carpark Safety
|
We have recently received reports of parents and caregivers rolling through the Give Way sign at the exit of our school driveway, narrowly missing children using the footpath. A reminder that pedestrians have right of way when using the footpath, so please slow down and take extra care in and around the carpark area.
|
|

Book and Puzzle Swap
|
We now have a book and puzzle swap in the staffroom which parents are welcome to borrow/exchange from. Good quality recent novels can be swapped and puzzles also. (Please make sure puzzles are in a plastic bag and complete).

Canterbury Cross Country Competition
|
|
This year we had 4 athletes qualify for the Canterbury competition.
|
|
Oscar C - Year 5 came 1st in his race
|
|
Janie W - Year 8 came 5th in her race, 6th overall
|
|
Ryan E - Year 8 came 2nd in his race
|
Liam G - Year 8 came 3rd in his race
|
These tamariki will be representing us at the Canterbury competition on the 21st of June at Ngā Puna Wai.

Lincoln Zone Hockey/Football Competition
|
Some of our Year 5-8 students took part in the Lincoln Zones Hockey/Football competition on the 7th of June at Foster Park.
|
Our Year 7/8 Football Team came 3rd overall. A big thank you to Coach Craig Whinham who managed the team and supported them throughout the tournament.

Our Year 7/8 Hockey Team came 3rd, drawing with Lincoln Primary overall in their competition. A big thank you to Coach Matt Hall who encouraged his team and even coached some that had never played before.
|
Our two Year 5/6 Football Teams played well and had a good day, learning new skills and how to work together as a team. We would like to thank Coach Nat Winter who coached our Year 5/6 Blue team and Coach Dan Horwell who coached our Year 5/6 Orange team.
|

The Hits radio station came to Ararira last Wednesday and recorded a segment in Hikuwai. What an amazing opportunity for our tamariki!

Nourish Therapy Food Explorer Group
