We have certainly had a mix of weather over the last week as we move into some of our winter activities. Year 5-8 winter sport has started, with the tamariki travelling to different venues to have a go at a selection of sports each week. We also have a number of winter sports tournaments coming up. Thanks to Whaea Meeghan for her organisation of these and to the many parents who are helping out.

We had two of our senior students, Oli and An, compete at the Rotary Quiz this week, finishing in the top 10. We are very proud of their effort and results, representing our school with pride.
|
|
|
|
|
Our librarians and some of the Hikuwai children were entertained by a visiting author last week, Kinsa Hays. She shared great tips for writing and talked about how she became a published author, hoping to inspire some of our tamariki to do the same in the future.
|
|
|
|
|
We are all thinking of Claire this week as she is on bereavement leave. Claire’s father Ian Riches died after a short illness at Nurse Maude Rest Home early hours of Monday morning.
|
|
|
|
Claire is grateful that family celebrated his 90th birthday a few weeks ago. Ian relished his birthday lunch of a dozen oysters at No.4 just down the road from Nurse Maude.
|
|
Thank you to everyone who responded quickly filling in the form so we could organise children today to enable our staff to attend the NZEI meeting. We value our amazing staff and want the best working conditions for them so our tamariki can thrive.

This week we welcome Breanna, Chloe T, Finn B and Naincy to Huarapa, Muhtasim to Kaunuku, and Muntaha to Teretere.

We hope you have all settled in, have made some new friends and that you will soon love Ararira as much as we do!

If you know of families moving into the area or with preschoolers, please encourage them to fill out our online enrolment form soon as possible. This allows us to plan ahead and recruit the teachers we might need!

COVID-19 Isolation
|
A reminder the MoH advice is that you must self-isolate for 7 FULL days while you recover from COVID-19. This includes if you have had COVID-19 before. Day 0 is the day your symptoms started or when you tested positive, whichever came first. You cannot end your self-isolation early, even if you later test negative during the 7 days. Your child may come back to school on Day 8 providing they are symptom-free.

Mobile Phones
|
We have recently received reports of parents and caregivers using their mobile phones while driving in and around the school carpark. Please don't use your mobile phone while driving.
|
|
|
|
|
It is illegal to send and receive text messages, emails, or take calls on hand-held mobile devices while driving in New Zealand, and is a danger to our precious tamariki and families.
|
|
|
|

Second-Hand Uniforms - THT has a small selection of second-hand uniform items available for purchase. Click here to view a list of the items we currently have available. We are always looking to increase our selection and would welcome donations of good-quality uniform items. All profits are used by THT to improve our school and provide resources for our tamariki. A reminder we are now using Kindo for all school payments (uniforms, sushi, Subway, school activity and voluntary donations, etc.), so all your payments and purchases are in one place.

All orders will be delivered to school in batches and distributed to the classrooms as they arrive. Any orders marked as gifts, we will put to one side and contact you when they are ready to be collected.

Selwyn District Council School Travel Plan Survey
To get a better understanding of how our school families are travelling to and from school, the Selwyn District Council are running a Schools Travel Plans Survey which shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to complete.
|
The purpose of a school travel plan is to:
|
- Improve the safety of your children’s travel to and from school
- encourage and support school families to reduce the use of cars
- reduce congestion at the school gate
- reduce energy use and pollution of our environment.
|
Responses will be kept confidential between you and the Road Safety Team at Selwyn District Council, and participants will go in the draw to win swim vouchers for the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. The survey will be open until 11.59pm, Monday 5 June 2023.
