Connect Communication

06 April 2022

Kia ora e te whānau

This is likely to be the last "Connect' communication this term. We will send another COVID update next week. We have been trending well below the regional averages for case numbers and have been pondering the difference. We don't mind though, this is a race we would rather not be winning.

We are hopeful that when we return to school next term we will be at 'orange' of the COVID Protection framework and that we will be able to ease some restrictions. I know that the children are looking forward to the return of free play at break times, curiosity clubs and mixed groupings. We envisage that mask-wearing would be optional for Year 4 - 8 students (with the exception of buses). We will email you during the break with more details of these changes.

It has been great to see our children highly engaged in learning outside the classroom over the last few weeks. This has included Enviro leaders monitoring plant survival in the local area, golf lessons and a trip to the Golf Club for our older ākonga, Bee Awesome and Brickz for Kids returning to school. We have some rugby planned for our older students over the next few weeks.

A huge thanks to the team who have worked hard to support learners working at home and the children at school. We hope you enjoy a great term break and we look forward to a more predictable term 2.

Covid RAT Kits

If you are sick and need to test for Covid, please feel free to send someone who is not sick to the office to collect a kit. We have a good supply here for school whanau and staff use.

Music Lessons

We have some spaces available with our itinerant music teachers next term. Cat has a few spaces for drums, Katrina for guitar and ukulele and if possible vocals.

Tyler, our new tutor, has room for piano, guitar, flute and saxophone if we can under red. (please note you would need to supply your own instrument with the exception of a keyboard at school.)

Music Festival Auditions

A reminder that applications from talented singers and instrumentalists to audition to join a Representative Group - Junior & Senior Choir, Concert Band, Orchestra - close in two weeks at the end of Term 1.
If your child has talent in this area then this could be a wonderful opportunity to join an incredible festival and perform in the Christchurch Town Hall in term 4.

Pātaka Kai

Lincoln now has a Pātaka Kai, a street pantry for fresh fruit and vegetables. Often on our community page there are a number of people wanting to share their excess fruit, vegetables or herbs with others. With the kindness of a local building company (Mike & Emma McConway) and us here at Ararira Springs Primary School, we have provided a Pātaka Kai (translates as food storehouse, pantry) to centralise this act of kindness. This is a project to connect with our community, reduce what would be food wastage and spread some aroha (love). You will find the Pātaka Kai in the Ararira Springs Primary School carpark outside the office area against the fence.

How does it work?

It’s very simple: Leave what you can, take what you need. Neighbours, local businesses and other organisations who find themselves with excess fruit and vegetables which would otherwise go to waste, can leave it here in the pantry.

Those who wish to contribute do so by leaving their excess fresh produce or vegetables. Members of the community can visit the pantry at any time and take what they need. It’s free and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please make a post on our facebook page if you should make a donation - that way members of the community can visit the Pātaka Kai should they wish to.

Facebook page Pātaka Kai or use the QR code.

This Pātaka Kai is for our community and we ask that we all look after it. Please don’t leave any rubbish behind when you drop off produce.

This Pātaka Kai is for fresh fruit and veges only
*No clothing, books, or other household items
*Bring your own bag or box to carry items home
*Keep the pantry doors closed
*The children here at school (our Year 2’s) will clean it out once a week and ensure it is kept clean.

Triple P Free Online Parent Courses

Immediate online positive parenting support offered to all families in Aotearoa

To support mental health, resilience and emotional wellbeing for our tamariki and rangatahi, Ministry of Health are partnering with Whāraurau to offer free online versions of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program® across the country.

Triple P is an evidence-based programme with a long history of successful use in New Zealand. More than 10,000 New Zealand whānau have accessed some type of Triple P support in the areas where it has been available free for the past 10 years, with many turning to online programmes throughout the Covid 19 pandemic.

There are three free Triple P Online programmes available throughout Aotearoa to help parents and caregivers positively support children to reduce anxiety, build emotional resilience and life skills, and cope with life’s challenges. These programs also help whānau stay calm and optimistic, guide behaviour positively, and encourage children’s learning.
  • FEAR-LESS TRIPLE P ONLINE – for parents and caregivers of children and teenagers (6-14 years) who have significant anxiety.
This 6-module online course gives parents and caregivers a better understanding of anxiety, gives them skills and strategies to improve children’s coping capacity, and helps parents develop safe, gradual ways for children and teens to face anxiety-provoking situations and overcome their fears. It also helps boost children’s and teenagers’ confidence and problem-solving skills.
  • TRIPLE P ONLINE – positive parenting for those who have toddlers to 12-year-olds.
This 8-module online course helps parents and caregivers develop a range of positive ways to address child behaviours, promote new skills and help emotional self-regulation, to help them improve family relationships and raise happier, more confident and capable tamariki.
  • TEEN TRIPLE P ONLINE – positive parenting for those who have ‘tweens’ or teenagers – 10-16 years
This 6-module online course helps parents and caregivers understand more about pre-teen and teenage development and behaviour, so they can provide the best environment for raising responsible, resilient rangatahi while maintaining close relationships and minimising conflict.

Caregivers can immediately register and begin their free online programmes by visiting http://www.triplep-parenting.net.nz
