9 March 2022

Kia ora e te whānau,

Thanks for your continued support. As I mentioned in my COVID update today I do think our low numbers are a testament to parents keeping their unwell children at home, thank you!

The Ministry of Health has just made the announcement to the change in isolation period for household and positive cases. This comes into effect on Friday and means that children of household cases can return to school if they are well and return a negative test on day 7.

Hikuwai 4 and 5 returned from a wonderful camp in Tekapo last week. They had wonderful experiences that included star gazing, tramps and paddle boarding. Huge thank to the parents; Damien, Allison, Caitlin, Anne-Maree, Virginia, Ray and Melissa who supported them and of course to Danielle and Carolyn. Being responsible for learners away from home is a daunting task and they did it so well. Thanks too, to Andy Murray for helping make this happen.

This week we welcome Grayson Schapel to Huarapa. We know you will soon love Ararira as much as we do!

From the Office

Pizza Fundraiser

Please remember the cut off for the school camp pizza fundraiser is 2pm on Mondays. This is because the students have to pre-order the pizzas via Dominos the day before. We suggest you pop a reminder in your personal calendar so you don't forget as we have had a few disappointed children whose parents missed the deadline.

Face Masks

If your child is required to wear a mask at school, please ensure they bring a mask every day. We also suggest popping a few spares in their bag as we are finding they get lost or broken frequently. Children are not required to wear medical-grade masks so reusable fabric ones are just fine.

We are happy to support your Year 3 or 4 children wearing a mask IF they wish to.

Slow Down Around Schools

We have been contacted about speed concerns on Southfield Drive and Russ Drive. Please slow down around the school at drop off and pick up. A reminder also that the speed limit in the school drive and car park is 10km per hour.

Sunhats

A reminder that sunhats are compulsory when playing outside in Term 1 and 4. We have plenty in stock in the office, so if you purchase via Kindo you can collect straight away.

Triple P Free Online Parent Courses

Immediate online positive parenting support offered to all families in Aotearoa

To support mental health, resilience and emotional wellbeing for our tamariki and rangatahi, Ministry of Health are partnering with Whāraurau to offer free online versions of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program® across the country.

Triple P is an evidence-based programme with a long history of successful use in New Zealand. More than 10,000 New Zealand whānau have accessed some type of Triple P support in the areas where it has been available free for the past 10 years, with many turning to online programmes throughout the Covid 19 pandemic.

There are three free Triple P Online programmes available throughout Aotearoa to help parents and caregivers positively support children to reduce anxiety, build emotional resilience and life skills, and cope with life’s challenges. These programs also help whānau stay calm and optimistic, guide behaviour positively, and encourage children’s learning.
  • FEAR-LESS TRIPLE P ONLINE – for parents and caregivers of children and teenagers (6-14 years) who have significant anxiety.
This 6-module online course gives parents and caregivers a better understanding of anxiety, gives them skills and strategies to improve children’s coping capacity, and helps parents develop safe, gradual ways for children and teens to face anxiety-provoking situations and overcome their fears. It also helps boost children’s and teenagers’ confidence and problem-solving skills.
  • TRIPLE P ONLINE – positive parenting for those who have toddlers to 12-year-olds.
This 8-module online course helps parents and caregivers develop a range of positive ways to address child behaviours, promote new skills and help emotional self-regulation, to help them improve family relationships and raise happier, more confident and capable tamariki.
  • TEEN TRIPLE P ONLINE – positive parenting for those who have ‘tweens’ or teenagers – 10-16 years
This 6-module online course helps parents and caregivers understand more about pre-teen and teenage development and behaviour, so they can provide the best environment for raising responsible, resilient rangatahi while maintaining close relationships and minimising conflict.

Caregivers can immediately register and begin their free online programmes by visiting http://www.triplep-parenting.net.nz

Tēnā koe,

Environment Canterbury is consulting on its draft Annual Plan 2022/23 from today Wednesday 2 March to Sunday 3 April 2022.

Your students and their families may be interested in the proposal for changing bus fare structure. We’re looking at options of either fare-free travel, flat fares or a tertiary student concession.

We’re also keen to hear views on how we fund flood protection and recovery, and a future rate to accelerate action on climate change.

All information about the proposals and how to have your say can be found at ecan.govt.nz/annualplan22

We encourage you to share this message with your staff, students, and wider networks, as everyone’s input is needed. We'd love for you to print the attached poster and place where it can be seen.

Ngā mihi,
Environment Canterbury

One Day School Programme

I am wanting to touch base with you about our unique programmes - perfect for those tamariki with dyslexia or dyspraxia, who just need a break from four days in the classroom.

Our One-day school programme has been operating for four years now, at our base in Orton Bradley Park. We are hands-on, experiential, on the farm, in the bush, and down by the sea. Currently, we have tamariki from 17 schools across the city, from Pegasus to Sumner, Diamond Harbour to Somerfield.

Each of our sessions is purposefully created, with a strong structured learning component in our outdoor environment. To see a sample of our day, please do not hesitate to check out a recent film we had made. Or do check out our various social media links below.

Please also see below for details on our holiday programmes. Earlybird finishes 10th March.
