23 February 2022

Kia ora Whānau,

As many of you know, Hikuwai 1, 2 and 3 spent three lovely days at Living Springs last week. It was wonderful for them to get out and about spending time in the outdoors. It was lovely to spend some time over there with them. It is a beautiful part of Christchurch.

We are keeping everything crossed that the Year 7 and 8 camp to Tekapo Springs goes ahead next week. Camps are an important part of the school experience and we are trying hard to ensure that life stays as close to normal as it can for our tamariki.

Thank you for keeping your sick children home. As mentioned in yesterday's Hero post. If you are messaging us with information regarding absences we would appreciate detail as we are keeping close notes on the situation. We hope the following flow chart helps when making the decision of what to do if you or someone in your family is unwell. Please know that our children's wellbeing is our primary concern and we are following all MOE and MOH guidance. If you happen to get a result over the weekend feel free to text the number below email me at principal@ararira.school.nz - you will be responded to outside of school hours.

Thanks so much for your continued support, we really do appreciate it.

Welcome to Te Puna o Ararira

This week we welcome Chloe F to Kaunuku, and An to Hikuwai. We know you will soon love Ararira as much as we do!

From the Office

Face Masks

If your child is required to wear a mask at school, please ensure they bring a mask every day. We also suggest popping a few spares in their bag as we are finding they get lost or broken frequently. Unfortunately, if we continue to have to give out masks we will have to start adding a charge. Children are not required to wear medical-grade masks so reusable fabric ones are just fine.

We are happy to support your Year 3 or 4 children wearing a mask IF they wish to.

Thank you

A huge thank you to the Wade Family for looking after our school field irrigation over the summer break. The fields are looking lovely and lush thanks to all your hard work!

Slow Down Around Schools

We have been contacted about speed concerns on Southfield Drive and Russ Drive. Please slow down around the school at drop off and pick up. A reminder also that the speed limit in the school drive and car park is 10km per hour.

Sunhats

Sunhats are compulsory when playing outside in Term 1 and 4. We have plenty in stock in the office, so if you purchase via Kindo you can collect straight away.

Passion Projects

Last Friday morning, Huarapa started passion projects. One of the groups is urban farmers. The first session was having Lesley from BeeAwesome visit.

What a great lesson, with the wonderful worker bees. They learnt all about the different bees and the different jobs that they do. Then they learnt about the hive and how to set a frame up. Next, the children put on bee suits and visited the bees.

All had a fantastic time!

Need to Cancel a Kindo Lunch Order?

With COVID around, we're getting a few calls about how to cancel lunch orders. Here's a quick DIY reminder that takes no time at all!

PS. Remember to do it early! Cancellations are only available until the order cut-off time.
How to cancel...
  1. Login to myKindo and go to my orders.
  2. Find the correct delivery date.
  3. Select Cancel and ok.
Please Note:
The purchase price will be refunded to your myKindo account balance.
If you have multiple students in the one lunch order you will need to cancel the order and then reorder for the student that is still requiring lunch.

School Board News

The school board met for the first time this year on 9 February. Hilary Kingston was re-elected as the presiding member (the new term for ‘chair’), and all other portfolios remain as previously:

Finance: Amanda Black
Health & Safety: Sara Shea
Policy/Deputy Chair: Andrew McMenamin
Property: David Fitchett

We signed off on the budget for the year and camp planning, and reviewed the Covid-19 plan which has recently been published by Claire.

The school has been approached by a company offering a solar energy package which would have no additional cost to the school over our existing electricity bills, and we resolved to investigate this further.

Finally, board elections are scheduled for September, and we encourage any whānau who are considering standing for the board to come to one of our meetings to see what we do, and to get involved in reviewing our school’s strategic plan, which is due to be reviewed and updated in the second half of the year.

Ngā mihi,
Andrew McMenamin
