Connect Communication

06 July 2022

Kia ora Whānau,

I have succumbed to COVID this week and write this last greeting for the term from home. It has been a long term of illness and we thank you for your diligence in keeping sick children at home. Please use our systems and notify us of the reason for the absence. Hero is best but email or phone is fine too. It saves a lot of running around in the morning as we need to ensure that everyone has arrived safely.

You will have received our email advising you of the next Board elections. We are calling for nominations. Two of our current members will not be standing again. Please refer to that email for details and the option to attend an evening session on Monday 25th July with Tom Scollard outlining the role. It is an exciting time as the school grows and we add to buildings and playground spaces.

On that note, we met with the Ministry of Education this week and stage 2 of our building for 300 students has been confirmed. It is very likely that we will also host a satellite provision for Waitaha. This will provide places for up to 16 students.

Thanks again for supporting our initiative to get the 'kiss and go' area as it was intended. Staff have been active in trying to change the way this is being used. We have had reports of people on their cell phones whilst driving and would appreciate extra diligence and attention when navigating the car park area.

Hopefully, when we return to school next term we will have made it through the latest surge in COVID cases. We ask you to continue to treat us like the mall and supermarket and wear a mask when you are inside, masks are encouraged but optional in outdoor spaces.

Learning Comments and Conversations
You may have been receiving regular updates from ako teachers, but if not, all comments and graphs will be available tomorrow. We will be hosting learning conversations on the first Wednesday and Thursday of Term 3. The booking link can be accessed here, but will not be open until next week to allow teachers time to book in breaks. I will send this separately over the break. The code is 435t6.

Finally, we look forward to welcoming new families to our school with a mihi whakatau early in Term 3. I will send more information to the families who have recently started with us but the invitation is extended to all. This is a wonderful opportunity to embrace our new whānau into the Ararira fold.

Until then, have a great break with your whānau. Ngā mihi nui,

Claire and the Team

School Board News

Kia ora koutou,

The School Board met on the 22nd June. We are pleased that the Ministry of Education have now initiated the process for the build of our additional classroom block. The MOE Delivery Team are meeting with the board and Claire on site next week regarding new buildings. It was decided that discussion about future playground space and equipment will wait until after the meeting with the Ministry in case there are additional funds made available as part of the new classroom block build.

Claire continues to work in her role as lead Principal for our Kāhui Ako and it was a pleasure to be able to host a successful Rangitahi day at Ararira for approximately 40 ākonga Māori sharing their stories. Over 240 teachers attended the Mana Ōrite conference, also held at Arairia. As part of the professional development through the Kāhui Ako, CORE Education have agreed to work with the new elected school board regarding culturally responsive practice and responsibilities in relation to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The board would like to thank THT for their hard work and efforts to fundraise and create memorable events and experiences for our school community. We also thanked the staff for their dedication to our tamariki and whānau throughout a tough term with winter illness and the disruption that can create. We hope everyone enjoys a safe and relaxing term break.

School Board elections 2022
The current school board term is coming to an end. The election date for a new school board has been set for 7th September 2022. The next three year term will be an exciting and busy one for our growing school and community. We will be building a new teaching block and finalising landscaping and additional playground equipment. There is a national curriculum refresh and continuing development and implementation of the National Education Learning Priorities.

If you have a skill set to support the school in the next phase of development, please consider putting your name forward for nomination. The call for nominations will be in July and further information about the process will be shared soon. If you are interested in joining the board and would like to find out more about what it involves, you are welcome to attend our last meeting on the 10th August and/or contact any of our current members. Contact details are on the school website. If you would like to attend the next meeting please contact Trine for more information.

NEXT MEETING - 10 August, 6.30 pm in the Staffroom

Matariki

Last Friday we enjoyed another stunning night celebrating Matariki with friends and whãnau.

This included marshmallow toasting, star gazing, human star hunting, lantern walks, star dome, reflection and beautiful waiata with a sunset backdrop.

Thanks to our incredible parent group (Te Hapori Tautoko) who put on this event for all to enjoy. Huge thanks to Christchurch Astro Tours for sharing your knowledge and telescopes (with Ben and Nigel), to Ann-Marie from the International Antarctic Centre for the dome, and to New World Lincoln for their generosity in providing $400 worth of vouchers to put towards food for our Matariki celebration.

Corner

What a busy sporting term we have had! This week saw us participating in the Lincoln Zone Basketball Tournament. Although we did not win any of our games our boys showed how they worked together to support each other and keep trying until the last siren sounded. We are very proud of boys and the effort they put in. Our girls team will be going through to the Canterbury’s and although their games at the tournament were friendlies they too put in their best effort to start preparing for the next round of games.
