Connect Communication

25 May 2022

Kia ora e te whānau,

It was so lovely to welcome you back onsite last week to our wonderful art gallery. Our wee artists were so proud of their efforts and it was heartwarming to see photos being taken with the artist. These pieces will take pride of place at home and you may want to frame them to make them last.

Ararira belongs to the Ngā Matapuna o Ngā Pākihi Kāhui Ako. All schools and preschools in the area belong to this group. We are currently organising a conference for the kāhui and this will be hosted at Ararira on June 7th which is our Teacher Only Day. Please mark this in your diaries, Kelly Club will be operating for families that need it.

We are proud of our recent fundraising efforts with children raising money and supporting worthy causes. Our pink shirt day raised $351 and children donated $393 dollars to Youthline via Emma Timms. Part of rangatiratanga is the idea of supporting others so this fits well with our values.

We are excited to see things start to return to normal with hui and curiosity clubs resuming soon. We welcome you back into the learning hubs but ask that you continue to wear a mask should you be popping inside.

Ngā mihi ki a koutou,

Claire and the team

COVID UPDATE

We are still experiencing a number of positive cases at school. Some of these children have been asymptomatic and therefore unknowingly been at school when potentially infectious. Added to the mix is that cases of flu and colds are upon us and children show similar symptoms.

The total number of children who have had or are currently unwell with COVID is 109 students. Our roll is 350 so this represents 31% of our students.

School Board News

Kia ora koutou,

The School Board met on the 18th May. We were able to look at the long term curriculum plans with a school wide focus on connections. The curricula focus aligns with strategic goals. Nicky also shared information about the structured literacy approach and we discussed how literacy is supported throughout the year levels.

Claire and Hilary met with Greg Tucker in term one, who is our reviewer from the Education Review Office (ERO). We are looking forward to continuing our working relationship with Greg.

The Board thanked Claire for her ongoing work managing all the additional responsibilities and implications that Covid brings. There has been a bigger impact on staffing so far this term but there are sound systems in place for working through issues to ensure minimal impact on the children.

The next board meeting is scheduled for 22nd June. We will be reviewing the annual plan and hope that we may have a property advisor appointed from the Ministry of Education by then so we can start planning for the build of our final classroom block.

School Board elections 2022
The current school board term is coming to an end. The election date for a new school board has been set for 7th September 2022. The next three year term will be an exciting and busy one for our growing school and community. We will be building a new teaching block and finalising landscaping and additional playground equipment. There is a national curriculum refresh and continuing development and implementation of the National Education Learning Priorities.

If you have a skill set to support the school in the next phase of development, please consider putting your name forward for nomination. The call for nominations will be in July and further information about the process will be shared soon. If you are interested in joining the board and would like to find out more about what it involves, you are welcome to attend the next meeting this term (22nd June) and/or contact any of our current members. Contact details are on the school website. If you would like to attend the next meeting please contact Trine for more information.

NEXT MEETING - 22 June, 6.30pm in the Staffroom
