Kia ora Whānau

A huge welcome to everyone coming back after the summer break. I spent my time away from school buried in a book and managed to get through quite a few titles in my R and R time. It is a shame that COVID has put a spanner in our plans to welcome our new whanau. Please know that you are warmly welcomed and we look forward to having you as part of our Ararira community.

Our roll is currently 330 and has more than tripled in the three years we have been open. Last week we welcomed 62 new children to Ararira. We know that you will soon come to know and love Ararira as we do. A warm welcome to the following tamariki;
  • From Huarapa - Anaya, Callen, Helena, Jaspar, Marshall, Michayla, Stella, Emilia, Hendrix, Henry, Lolah, Max, Rigel, Rosie, Skye, Anya, Aria, Arlo, Fergus, Frankie, Olive, Quinn, Theo and Zach.
  • In Teretere - Neveah, Mack, Katarina, Nico and Oscar.
  • Kaunuku welcomes - Isla, Jenny, Lachlan, Archer, Zack, Emmalin, Hunter and Sophie
  • Hikuwai welcomes - Alex W, Charlotte B, Chloe M, Eliza, Maddox, Ailee, Emma F, Ethan H, Keanu, Tien, Amelia, Millie B, Vincent, Zy, Alice M, Campbell, Ethan P, Johannes, Noah, Oscar, Amelia, Emily Z, Luke W, Reuben, Ryan and Skye.
We also welcome new teachers, Kelly McIntyre, Shelley Smith and Michael McDermott. Meeghan Coetzee and Larissa Jay are permanent additions to the team and Leonie Pengelly and April Tougas join forces to teach a Year3/4 class in Kaunuku. Kylie Gordon returns to us as a learning assistant. You can read more about these wonderful people on the teaching team page of the website.

Thanks to you all for adhering to our COVID guidelines for operation at Red of the CPF. Here is the link to parent information if you do need to refresh your memories. The key reminders are;
  • visitors to the site should be limited and must sign in and wear a mask
  • parents are not able to go into classroom spaces
  • teachers and children in years 5-8 need to wear masks when inside
  • crossover of groups is limited
  • large gatherings, like hui and assemblies, are to be avoided.
If you need to see a teacher at any time please email in the first instance and arrange a time to meet if required.

The start back to school has been hugely positive. Children have been focussed and we have seen an improvement in behaviour. This hasn't happened by chance but has been the result of focused effort from the teaching team. We spent considerable time prior to opening working and developing a consistent approach to behaviour at our school. You can read more in this blog post, the Three C's to Behaviour at Ararira.

Hikuwai learners head off to camp over the next few weeks. Our year 5 and 6 students are off to Living Springs and year 7 and 8 head away to Tekapo Springs. We have worked to ensure that these can continue with alignment to the guidance for EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) at 'red' of the CPF.
Thanks so much for your continued support,
Claire and the Ararira Team

FROM THE OFFICE

Face Masks

We don't have an unlimited supply of masks at school so please ensure your child brings a mask every day. We also suggest popping a few spares in their bag as we are finding they get lost or broken frequently. Unfortunately, if we continue to have to give out masks we may have to start adding a charge. Children are not required to wear medical grade masks so reusable fabric ones are just fine.

Slow Down Around Schools

We have also been contacted about speed concerns on Russ Drive. Please slow down around the school at drop off and pickup. A reminder also that the speed limit in the school drive and carpark is 10km per hour.
