Connect Communication

24th February 2021

Kia ora e te whānau,

It was lovely to see so many of you at our first event for the year, the 'Meet the Team Picnic'. We were blessed with a warm evening and it was great to see many learners having fun at school. It is always a good sign for us that they are reluctant to leave. Teaching teams gave an outline of their programmes and expectations.

Over the next two terms, you will receive updates on your child's learning in the areas of caring, curiosity and capability. Before the end of term two, there will be comments on their reading, writing and mathematics capability. We will invite you to meet with the teacher towards the middle of the year. But remember, you can request a meeting at any time.

On Monday we held our first swimming sports at Halswell Pool, thanks to Matua Blair for the organisation of this event and we will post results in the next newsletter. Today our Year 5 and 6 learners boarded the bus to Hanmer Springs. I will join them tomorrow and look forward to seeing all the learning that takes place in an outdoor setting. Thanks to Sam, Hinehau, Carolyn and our wonderful team of parents supporting this event.

Kia pai to mutunga wiki,
Claire and the team

Inquiry Learning About Tuna | Eels

As part of our inquiry towards the end of last year, the NE children studied tuna (eels). As part of an action to protect these species, some of the children made some artwork to encourage the community to do the same. A big thank you to Helen Lee from "Tall Poppy Real Estate, in Lincoln" who without hesitation, printed our boards for us. These are now along the Liffey Springs walkway, outside our school. Please have a look at these on your way to and from school and ask your child about the mighty tuna!

Are you interested in helping at school?

We would love for you to be involved in school life if you would like to. Teachers will soon put the call out for classroom helpers and many of you already are regular helpers on trips, visits and camps.
More specific ways of helping may be road patrol or helping to run a curiosity club. Road patrol involves the commitment to one session a week, either in the morning from 8:30 - 9 or in the afternoon from 3-3:15. You can offer this help on a term by term basis and don't have to sign up for the whole year.

Curiosity Clubs run for 8 weeks of a term on Fridays from 9:30 - 10:30. You might like to offer an activity or help out. By helping out it enables to make our more popular groups bigger and you would work alongside a teacher. In the past clubs have included hockey, netball, knitting, crafts, science, chess, movie making, wheels and scooters, baking and wearable arts. We are only limited by our abilities or confidence.

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom please contact the class teacher. For road patrol or curiosity clubs please contact Donna, donna.frame@ararira.school.nz.

The cost of materials used for take-home projects is $42 per student - this will be added to your school account.
