Connect Communication

16th June 2021

Kia ora e te whānau,

This evening we are meeting with the families of our five year olds starting school in term 3. As my eldest is in his last year of school this causes me to reflect on the relationships we develop with other parents through school. I am still close to the parents of children Jacob was close to when he was five. You are forging life long friendships through your connections at Ararira and this has been fostered through opportunities provided by our amazing Te Hapori Tautoko team.

Te Hapori Tautoko are meeting on Thursday night at 7pm for the AGM and regular meeting. This is an amazing group of parents who create wonderful opportunities for whanau to connect with each other. It is time for the office bearers, Shelley, Sarah and Fran to pass the baton to others. On behalf of the whanau and staff I would like to thank these women for the contribution they have made to the Ararira community.

The weather is a little bleak at this time of year and it was great to see so many gumboots being worn today. Do feel free to send your child in gumboots and with slippers for the colder weeks.

You can't but notice the construction taking place opposite the school. Should you notice anything unsafe please let one of the team know and we can approach contractors on behalf of the school. Parking on the street is at a premium so please consider walking from a little further away on sunnier days.

We have had incidents recently of children getting access to material on the website that is scary or inappropriate. It is timely to remind you of safe practices at home. Children should always be using their devices in public places in the home. Periodically check browser history, have access to all devices and chat with your child about what they are viewing online. If they are not keen to show you what they are watching, then it is probably not okay. If children breach our internet agreement then they will lose the privilege of using a device at school. Watching a recent webinar about more explicit online content a quote particularly resonated, 'we need to build (within our children) an internal filter for life in an unfiltered world.'
learning conversations
A quick reminder about picking your children up early on a few days in June. On June 23rd and 24th we are hosting our Learning Conversations and on June 30th many of the team are heading to Rolleston for a paid union meeting. If you require us to provide care for your child(ren), please let ako teachers know. You can make a booking for learning conversations via schoolinterviews.co.nz code tnyau.
Thanks so much to all of you, that when you have had a concern, have first emailed the classroom teacher. This is always your first port of call and the most direct route to a resolution. Often the discussion is best face to face, please don't feel you have to wait for formal meeting times, these can be scheduled any time. If you feel that your concern has not been addressed the next avenue is the team leader or myself (if the teacher is the team leader). Please be mindful that our teachers are parents and family members and might not be in a position to respond to your email immediately. You should receive a response within 48 hours, if not, email again and copy in the team leader.

Keep warm and we look forward to seeing you next week.

Ngā mihi,
Claire and the Ararira Team

News From the Board of Trustees

Kia ora koutou,

The Board met on the 19th May and we finalised the ‘Learning at Home’ policy. Thank you to the staff and parents who contributed to the review of our current policy. Your input is important, appreciated and encouraged. You can access the updated policy from the school website. The policy reflects the opportunities for families to share and celebrate learning from all different contexts.

The policy to be reviewed by the school community this term is our assessment and learning policy. To be a part of this review process please visit our Schooldocs site at https://ararira.schooldocs.co.nz. Our username is "ararira" and password "russdrive"

Thank you to THT for organising another successful and colourful school disco. The event was enjoyed by all and it was great to see the young and older members of the school community enjoying themselves.

The school now has a road safety committee that is working to ensure our children can travel safely to and from school. A particular focus is the kiss and go drop off area. As the school roll grows and there is an increase in traffic, please remember that this area is provided to allow you to briefly stop and drop off or pick up your waiting tamariki. If you need to get out of your car, please use the car park.

As the school grows, we considered staffing for the remainder of the year and have approved roles for an additional 0.6 teaching position in Kaunuku plus two more learning assistants.

The board has also begun discussions about the proposed reasoning of land on the southern side of Lincoln (known as PPC 69) and we are working with the Ministry of Education to understand the implications for our school and formulate a submission to the District Council.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 23rd June 6:30pm.

Kaunuku 1 and 2 Celebration of Learning - Fairy doors!
Kaunuku 1 and 2 invited our whānau to school last Thursday for our Celebration of Learning. We have been working very hard all year to design and decorate our own Fairy doors and fairies/elves to go with them. This all came about after we went on a school trip to McHugh’s Forest in Term 1 to see the Fairy doors there. From that experience, we collaborated with our groups to create our own Fairy door designs and sent them to the Lincoln Mens Shed to be made out of wood. This term has been all about painting our doors, adding decorations and creating our peg fairies/elves. We are so proud of what we have produced and would also like to recognise and send a HUGE THANK YOU to the Lincoln Mens Shed for their help! They did such an amazing job of bringing our ideas to life, even the most intricate ones.
