Term 4 is underway and we begin our final run towards the end of the year. I hope that you get to experience some fun in the sun over the long weekend.
Term 4 means that we must wear hats during breaks and outdoor activities. This should be a navy bucket hat and can be purchased at school, online through Argyle or at any department store.
Last week was a busy first week with a lot of fun events. We welcomed our new families with a mihi whakatau on Monday, House of Bricks provided a creative Lego experience on Tuesday, NZ Playhouse shared their 'Chilled' performance on Wednesday and Lincoln High School Kapa Haka came to work with students. On Thursday we all participated in the national Shake Down drill and on Friday wore pink shirts in support of the anti-bullying campaign.
A huge thank you to Te Hapori Tautoko for providing us with such a wonderful quiz event on Friday. Money was raised, laughter and fun shared, a wonderful combination. The money will more than provide for school-owned t-shirts that the children can wear when representing the school.

Last Friday we held our inaugural quiz night, which was a highly successful and enjoyable night. A big thank you to our quizmaster Chris Seller for volunteering his time to create and present an entertaining quiz with a wide range of questions which tested all teams. Thank you to our markers Aleisha Seller and Steve Morgan from Ray White. We really appreciated all the businesses that sponsored us and a huge thanks must go out to them for their generosity and support.
The amazing businesses that sponsored us are listed below. We would like to acknowledge Richard Clarke, our gold sponsor of Panda Mortgages and Selwyn Cycles. On the night we auctioned off 3 amazing prizes that were donated. Firstly a children’s frog bike provided by Selwyn Cycles, then a family portrait by Kelly Shakespeare Photography and a family soak from Tekapo Star Gazing.

Thank you to Fran Fitchett, Sarah Fogarty and Anna Kingi who were the main organisers of our quiz. Your enthusiasm, time and organisation are really appreciated. It was such a fantastic night and could not have happened without your commitment. Another thank you to all the other people who helped support the quiz by setting up the hall and helping out on the night.

A huge thank you to all of the teams who attended the quiz night. It was great to see the enthusiastic teams getting together and dressing up in theme and to see so many staff there. We really appreciated support! Lots of positive feedback has been received with people expressing their enjoyment and organisation of the night.
Proceeds from the event have enabled Ararira Springs to purchase sports uniforms for our tamariki to wear when they represent our kura in sporting events.
We look forward to making the quiz an annual fixture in 2021 and beyond.

On Tuesday 20th October a number of athletes headed to Foster Park to compete in a combined athletics event with Broadfield and Ladbrooks Schools. Children competed in traditional athletics events; sprints, high jump, long jump, discus and shotput. Those children that did well will be invited to compete at the zone event. FROM THE SELWYN DISTRICT COUNCIL TRAVEL TEAM
Help teach Selwyn kids safe road crossing skills
Selwyn District Council is reminding drivers to stop for pedestrians at kea crossings – but only when the stop ‘lollipop’ signs are out.
The only time drivers must stop for pedestrians is on a pedestrian crossing, at a school road patrol (a kea crossing) when the stop lollipop signs are out, and when pedestrians have a green man at traffic signals.
Although a kea crossing location may look like a pedestrian crossing with kerb buildouts or a pedestrian refuge in the middle, it is a normal section of road where drivers have right of way, except when the school road patrol is operating.
School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler says it’s important pedestrians stop, look and listen before crossing the road at a location with pedestrian facilities, and just like any other section of road, vehicles have the right of way.
“I often see drivers stopping to let children cross at cross points. Although drivers may think it’s courteous stopping in the lane, it’s incredibly dangerous and setting our children up for failure,” she says. ‘Slow down for sure as children are unpredictable but please don’t wave them across”
“Children may develop the false expectation that all vehicles will stop for them. Even if you stop, a driver in the other direction may not. It’s unsafe to stop in a live lane of traffic and you run the risk of being rear-ended or worse, being shunted into the pedestrian you were trying to help.”
If a vehicle stops on a crossing point, pedestrians should wave them on and wait for a gap in the traffic to cross safely.
Some handy hints for parents to teach their children:
- Wave traffic on and wait for a safe gap to cross.
- Be bright, be seen on your way to school, ask your school for a safety vest.
- Cross at the kea crossing when it is operating, this goes for parents too, young people are watching you!

My name is Rachel Zakaria and I am a postgraduate student studying towards a Master of Speech and Language Pathology degree at the University of Canterbury.
I am currently undertaking a research project that is looking into parents’ perspectives on their children’s language learning in New Zealand. The target participants of this research are parents/caregivers who:
- lives in New Zealand right now
- was born overseas/abroad
- speaks another language (or more) that is not English, Te Reo Māori, or New Zealand Sign Language, and
- has one child or more who is at preschool or school.
I would very much appreciate if you would be able to circulate this survey link to parents/caregivers at your organisation.
The survey should take approximately 10-13 minutes and it is completely anonymous.
Thank you so much for considering to be part of this survey. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Look forward to hearing from you.
