Yippee a return to Level 1 and a big hello to warmer weather. Let's hope that it stays fine over the term break to enable us to enjoy time out and about in the sunshine.

A huge thank you to Te Hapori Tautoko for their work with both the disco and our inaugural quiz night, and not to forget Pie day - Paraire - Friday! I am sure the children will love their Hillyers pie later in the week. Special thanks to Chris Seller (from Springston) who is volunteering much time and energy for both events.

As we head to spending some time with our families over the break I would love you to take the time to consider this reading and whether your face does your face lights up when your child enters the room? This is something that I have always attempted to do in my practice as an educator. Children need to know that they matter and have been seen.

A big thank you to the team for a busy term in these turbulent times and to you for the sensational job you do as parents. We are living in unprecedented times and change is definitely our new normal.

Hai konā mai,
Claire and the Ararira Team

Awesome Ararira Learning

In the last few weeks the fun, learning and laughter has continued at Ararira. Kaitiakitanga is one of supporting values and that has been evident in the school of late. Teretere have been busy with the action stage of their inquiry and have been planting a native garden down by the bee hives. The urpose of this is two-fold; to attract more native birds and to provide food for the nearby bees. We look forward to seeing this area flourish. Today, Kaunuku headed to Tai Tapu to take part in a plant out day. This has been part of the Kids Discovery Plant out, Te Ara Kākāriki.

One of our curiosity clubs has been busy completing our pop up penguin. Whaea Carolyn has led this group and has been ably supported by the passionate Emma and a keen group of Ararira learners. The group has been working hard and this is refected in the stunning work they have achieved.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori was a huge success with lots of te reo being spoken at school, hopefully you have heard more at home too. Teretere was the hub that spoke the more reo and were rewarded with some extra time on the playground.

Please support our local businesses and advertisers

We'd like to say a big thank you to all of our SkoolLoop advertisers. Please make sure you support them and let them know that you've chosen them because of their support for our school.
As well as our wonderful SkoolLoop advertisers, we'd like to say a big thank you to Bridgestone Tyre Centre Lincoln for rescuing Matua Blair last week. #supportlocal

FROM THE SELWYN DISTRICT COUNCIL TRAVEL TEAM
Help teach Selwyn kids safe road crossing skills

Selwyn District Council is reminding drivers to stop for pedestrians at kea crossings – but only when the stop ‘lollipop’ signs are out.

The only time drivers must stop for pedestrians is on a pedestrian crossing, at a school road patrol (a kea crossing) when the stop lollipop signs are out, and when pedestrians have a green man at traffic signals.

Although a kea crossing location may look like a pedestrian crossing with kerb buildouts or a pedestrian refuge in the middle, it is a normal section of road where drivers have right of way, except when the school road patrol is operating.

School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler says it’s important pedestrians stop, look and listen before crossing the road at a location with pedestrian facilities, and just like any other section of road, vehicles have the right of way.

“I often see drivers stopping to let children cross at cross points. Although drivers may think it’s courteous stopping in the lane, it’s incredibly dangerous and setting our children up for failure,” she says. ‘Slow down for sure as children are unpredictable but please don’t wave them across”

“Children may develop the false expectation that all vehicles will stop for them. Even if you stop, a driver in the other direction may not. It’s unsafe to stop in a live lane of traffic and you run the risk of being rear-ended or worse, being shunted into the pedestrian you were trying to help.”

If a vehicle stops on a crossing point, pedestrians should wave them on and wait for a gap in the traffic to cross safely.

Some handy hints for parents to teach their children:
    • Wave traffic on and wait for a safe gap to cross.
    • Be bright, be seen on your way to school, ask your school for a safety vest.
    • Cross at the kea crossing when it is operating, this goes for parents too, young people are watching you!
