Connect Communication

30th June 2021

Kia ora e te whānau,

As the cooler weather sets in I must confess to a secret obsession with curling up with a good book by the fire. Never underestimate the restorative power of reading. Reading to your child is just as beneficial as having them read and is a wonderful way to spend quality time together.

We are at the precipice of great change in education. Aotearoa New Zealand Histories is currently being developed for implementation and over the next 3 - 4 years all curriculum areas will be refreshed. This is both exciting and daunting. Our curriculum is very broad and permissive, allowing schools to localise their content. We are proud of our Ararira curriculum and how this evolved in collaboration with whanau, iwi and teachers.

The teaching of reading is also undergoing change. You will have heard of schools using a 'structured literacy approach. Members of our team are undertaking professional learning in this area. This should have a positive impact across the school as the emphasis on letters and sounds will benefit spelling and writing.

We are excited to host families for Matariki celebrations on Friday. Please scroll down to read about the details for Friday in the THT section of the newsletter. This is a wonderful way to celebrate something that is special to Māori and unique to NZ. We hope you can join us.
This is likely to the last newsletter for the term and an opportune time to say farewell to Whaea Stacey at the end of term 3. Stacey is heading to work in the world of structured literacy, offering one on one support to learners. We wish her all the very best. Stacey will be missed as a staff member but we will enjoy having her has a parent at Ararira.

Keep warm and we look forward to seeing you at our Matariki celebrations on Friday.

Ngā mihi,
Claire and the Ararira Team

If you have moved out of the zone since one of your children started at Ararira and they have a younger sibling due to start school in 2022, please complete the online enrolment form as soon as possible and email office@ararira.school.nz to advise of your situation so that we can ensure sufficient spaces are advertised in accordance with the Ministry of Education directives.
