Keeping Winter Bugs at Bay

As our focus has been on COVID awareness it is time to consider approaches to dealing with regular winter bugs and viruses. We missed a lot of these last winter due to the lockdown and physical distancing.
Remember;
  1. If your child is sick they are best at home,
  2. To wash your hands thoroughly throughout the day and remind children of this,
  3. To sneeze into elbows and if you do sneeze into your hands wash them.

Kia ora from the Board of Trustees

Tēnā koutou katoa from the Board of Trustees. It has been a busy time recently for staff and students including two school camps and several other successful trips and events.

The Board met on the 24th March and we discussed our ‘Learning at Home’ policy. Thank you to the staff and parents who contributed to the review of our current policy. Your input is important, appreciated and encouraged. The current policy encourages and recognises that learning takes place in a variety of ways and contexts. The Board has reaffirmed the underpinning philosophy of this policy and agreed that further detail should be provided. The school will make some changes to ensure the importance of reading to, with and by children is clearly stated as part of our learning at home policy.

In support of our learning at home policy, there is a link on the school website which is updated with ideas and activities for whanau to engage with( link to school website). We are cognisant that parents are interested in understanding what learning is taking place in the classroom and the progress of their children. Each learning hub operates a blog with weekly updates about the content and learning experiences of the children. These can also include some ideas for parents to support the specific learning focus at that time. Feedback from the review indicated that being able to see work from the children is a valued way of tracking progress of childrens’ learning. Parents are encouraged to connect with teachers to look at and discuss work and progress being made. This is not restricted to the parent evenings that are scheduled during the year and meetings can be requested at any time. Celebrations of learning will occur regularly throughout the year which will be an informal opportunity to come into the classroom to see specific projects.

The next policy for community review is in term 2 and is related to Health education. To be part of this review please visit our Schooldocs site at https://ararira.schooldocs.co.nz. Our username is "ararira" and password "russdrive"

The property committee has met and are initiating discussions with the Ministry of Education regarding our future building provision. The roll growth is steady and we want to ensure that the timeline for building will accommodate this growth. Discussions have started regarding the design and build of an additional playground area and student input will be sought for this.
The ERO report has been finalised and released as a public document.
You can currently access this from the school website, soon it will be available through both Education Counts and ERO sites.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 19th May.

In Case of an Emergency

emergency plan
Let's face it, we Cantabrians know that emergencies happen and we need to be prepared. I recently attended a superb workshop jointly run by the Ministry of Education and Police. This gave us the opportunity to fine-tune our plans and make a few changes. As a result, we have formed an incident management team. This includes me as Principal (or …

Mess Up, 'Fess Up, Fix Up, Move On

Mess Up, 'Fess Up, Fix Up, Move On
Learning to Manage Behaviour Behaviour, like all aspects of schooling, is something we all learn as we grow and mature. Just like learning to read and write, children develop behaviour skills at different times, based on their prior knowledge, experiences, environmental impact and also prior expectations.  Different personalities and temperaments also have an effect on managing behaviour, along with learning, …
